History of The DeBary Inn
The DeBary Inn is an 1880 Victorian home built by Mr. Adolphe DeBary. He and his wife, a Summit native named Augusta Cecil, and their three children lived in the home until 1898, when they moved to Florida.
Mr. DeBary was the son of Mr. Frederick DeBary, of whom was the sole importer of G.H. Mumm et Cie and P.A. Mumm for all of Manhattan and Canada. When Frederick passed away Adolphe inherited the many companies and real estate that his father had acquired. Adolphe also moved to Florida, where his father had been living and working. If you have ever heard of Debary, Florida it is because the town is named after Frederick.
In 1916 the property was sold to a development company. The company moved the original house 200 feet to its current location. They also divided up the 3.5 acre property into many smaller lots and added the street DeBary Place. In the 1970s, the house was sold and renamed “The DeBary Guest House” for use as a “boarding house” for many individuals and families facing hardships. It was sold again in 2006 to Anita Hill who started converting it into a bed & breakfast and renamed it The DeBary Inn. New owners acquired the property in 2009, since then The DeBary Inn has been a local luxury bed and breakfast (Boutique Inn).
